An Infectious Event (Kit)

Educate employees about the importance of proper hand washing to help prevent the spread of the flu and other infectious diseases.  Employers can order a “Germ Glow” kit to host a demonstration on how easily germs are passed along from person to person.  Kits usually include “germ glow” powder and oil, with an ultra violet light.  The powder and oil work by emitting a fluorescent glow when under the ultraviolet light.  It can be used on surfaces or an individual’s hands to demonstrate how germs are transferred and to show the importance of proper cleaning techniques.

ACTION PLAN

  1. Wellness coordinators should consult http://www.glogerm.com to purchase a Glo Germ kit.  Different options are available depending on the size of your workplace.
  2. Once you’ve received the Glo Germ kit, decide upon a date and time to host the event.  Find a suitable location to host the event in the workplace—a large, open area near an accessible sink is preferred—and reserve it for the date selected.
  3. Distribute promotional materials around the workplace that advertise the event, such as posters, e-mails, and faxes.
  4. Prior to the demonstration, gather information and/or printed materials on proper handwashing techniques.  Coordinators may distribute this information to participants during the event.
  5. Host the event and distribute handouts, brochures, etc on proper handwashing techniques.  Encourage one or two participants to model proper handwashing based on these resources.
  6. Following the demonstration, post photos from the event on a staff bulletin board along with information on handwashing and infection control.
