Healthy Recipe Contest (Kit)

A healthy recipe contest  promotes employees to cook appetizing  and healthy meals.  Participants are encouraged to submit their favorite  healthy recipe to activity coordinators, who will then judge each recipe based on its nutritional value, inventiveness, and taste.  The employee who has submitted the most mouth-watering  healthy meal is declared the winner.  Following the contest, coordinators have the opportunity to compile and distribute an employee cookbook from participants’ recipes.  Consider hosting this activity in connection with a holiday or theme–Lazy Days of Summer, Decadent Desserts, Home for the Holidays, etc…

Staff Required 1 or 2 activity coordinators
Monetary Cost Minimal costs related to compiling and printing cookbook
Timeline Contest requires a few weeks to a month

ACTION PLAN

  1. Activity coordinators should distribute promotional materials around the workplace advertising the event, such as posters, e-mails, and faxes.  Make sure that these materials clearly state the deadline for entries as well as the location or address where participants may submit their recipes.
  2. Once the deadline for entries has passed, review all the entries.  With the help of online resources (See Dietitians of Canada’s Recipe Analyzer weblink at bottom) or a registered  Dietitian, select the recipe that 1)  promotes the use of healthy ingredients and healthy cooking methods,  2) demonstrates creativity, and 3) tastes great.  Announce this recipe as the winner.
  3. Compile all the entries into a  healthy recipes cookbook.  The format and appearance of this document will depend upon available resources.  Coordinators may format the book using a word processor or simply photocopy each entry.
  4. Distribute the cookbook to employees via mail, fax, or e-mail.  Post a copy on the staff bulletin board along with tips for  healthy cooking methods.
